SOLIOM Metal Bird Feeder Camera

A metal, squirrel-resistant body at the bottom of the price range - from one of the very few makers in this category willing to print what its subscription costs before you buy.

How this page is funded. Buying through a link here earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we recommend it in, and we have not handled any of these products ourselves - see how we pick and the full disclosure.

Almost every feeder camera under a hundred dollars is molded plastic, and plastic is what a determined squirrel chews through in a season. This one is metal, and it is the cheapest metal body on this site by a clear margin. That is the reason it is here.

There are two other things about this product that matter and that the listing does not lead with - one of them good, one of them a cost - and they are what the rest of this page is about.

What a metal body actually buys you

Squirrels attack a feeder in two quite different ways, and only one of them is a materials problem. The first is chewing: a gray squirrel will work at a plastic hopper until there is a hole in it, and a season of that ruins the feeder. Metal ends that argument outright.

The second is simply eating - a squirrel sitting on the tray working through your sunflower, and filling your camera roll with pictures of itself while it does. Metal does nothing about that, and no listing in this category is careful about the distinction. The squirrel-proof roundup separates the two problems and ranks the feeders that address the second one.

Be clear about what the price buys you elsewhere, too. This is the bottom of the range, and it shows in the specification sheet rather than in the construction: no published seed capacity, no battery figure, no Wi-Fi band. You are buying a metal box with a competent 2K camera in it, not a documented product.

This is the cheapest route on this site into a metal body, and metal is the whole reason to consider it. A plastic hopper loses to a determined squirrel inside a season; a metal one does not, and nothing else here does it at this price.

Metal case, squirrel-proof claim: worth being precise about what that means. Metal stops a squirrel chewing through the housing. It does not stop a squirrel sitting on the tray and eating everything. Those are separate problems and the squirrel-proof roundup separates them.

The Wi-Fi band is not stated, which for a 2026 outdoor camera is the one omission that will actually cost you an evening. Check the manual before you mount it.

The subscription position is unusually clear, and unusually honest: SOLIOM publishes its cloud pricing, and its free tier is described in its own words as three-day storage "with no AI recognition functionality". So identification is a paid feature here - but at least you can find out what it costs before you buy, which puts SOLIOM ahead of most of the models whose plan prices are unpublished.

What it does well

  • Metal housing against chewing, at the lowest price here
  • 2K live view with instant arrival alerts
  • Solar as standard
  • Publishes its cloud plan pricing, which almost nobody in this category does

What it does not

  • Wi-Fi band is not published anywhere on the listing
  • Seed capacity is not published on the current listing
  • No published battery capacity
  • Species identification requires a paid cloud plan; the free tier explicitly has none
  • No species count is published, so the scope of the identification is unknown

Skip this: if you expect identification to work out of the box for nothing. SOLIOM's free tier states plainly that it has no AI recognition, so the species names are a subscription feature on this camera - budget for the plan or buy from the no-subscription roundup instead.

Perky-Pet SPCAM

This is the only feeder on the page whose squirrel defense is a mechanism rather than a material. Everything else says metal, which stops chewing. Perky-Pet's shield closes the feeding ports under a squirrel's weight, which stops eating. If squirrels are your actual problem, that distinction is the whole decision.

Perky-Pet has been making feeders far longer than anyone else here has been making cameras, and the hardware reflects it: a 3.5 lb hopper, a locking cap, sensitivity you can tune. The camera is 1080p, which is the trade.

Nothing about the app or the identification is published, and the Wi-Fi band is not stated. Buy this for the feeder; treat the camera as the bonus.

What it does well

  • Weight-activated port closure - the only mechanical squirrel defense in this roundup
  • Sure-Lock cap stops squirrels lifting the lid
  • 3.5 lb capacity from a maker that has been building feeders for decades
  • Adjustable trigger sensitivity

What it does not

  • 1080p, at the bottom of the range
  • No published Wi-Fi band
  • No stated species-identification capability at all

Skip this: if you want the photographs first and the feeder second. This is a very good squirrel-resistant feeder with a camera attached, and the flagship roundup is where the cameras live.

The subscription, and why we changed our mind about it

This is the part worth reading carefully. SOLIOM publishes its cloud plan pricing on its own website, and its free tier is described in the maker's own words as three-day loop storage "with no AI recognition functionality".

Two things follow. The first is a cost: species identification is a paid feature on this camera. If you buy it expecting the app to name the bird for free, it will not. The second is genuinely to SOLIOM's credit, and it is rarer than it should be - you can find out what that costs before you spend anything, because the plan tiers and their prices are published where a buyer can read them.

Almost nobody in this category does that. The recurring theme of the three-year cost guide is makers who put identification behind a plan and then decline to say what the plan costs, which makes the real price of the product unknowable at the point of purchase. SOLIOM puts a number on it. We would rather be charged a published price than an unpublished one, and it is reasonable to weigh that when you compare this against a rival whose plan is a mystery.

Metal, and what a squirrel-proof claim actually covers

The listing calls the metal case squirrel-proof. That phrase needs unpacking, because it means less than buyers assume.

Metal solves exactly one squirrel problem: chewing. A determined squirrel will destroy a plastic hopper in a season, and a metal one it cannot. What metal does nothing about is a squirrel sitting on the tray eating your seed and filling your camera roll with pictures of itself. That is a different problem with a different solution - weight-triggered ports, a baffle, or placement out of jumping range.

The second pick on this page exists to make that point concrete. The Perky-Pet SPCAM closes its feeding ports under a squirrel's weight, which is a mechanism rather than a material. If squirrels are the reason you are shopping at all, read the squirrel-proof roundup before you decide, because it separates chewing from eating in a way the product listings never do.

The specifications, and the one that is missing

2K live view with instant arrival alerts is mid-pack for the category - respectable, not remarkable, and entirely adequate for a full-frame shot of a bird on the tray. What the current listing does not state is the seed capacity, which matters more than people expect: a small hopper in a cold week empties in a couple of days, and a camera pointed at an empty tray photographs nothing.

The omission that matters is the Wi-Fi band. SOLIOM does not state it anywhere on the listing, and in this category that is the single specification most likely to ruin a purchase. Nearly everything here is 2.4GHz-only, and a modern router broadcasting both bands under one network name is the reason pairing fails. Assume 2.4GHz, read the Wi-Fi requirements guide before the box arrives, and know what you are going to change in your router settings if the app times out.

Battery capacity is also unpublished, which is the norm rather than a black mark - only one maker in this category states an mAh figure. With a solar panel in a sunny position it matters less. Under a canopy it matters a great deal, and the solar roundup has the five-minute test for working out which situation you are in.

Who should buy this

Someone who wants a metal feeder camera and does not want to spend much. Nothing else on this site puts a chew-proof body at this price, and over three winters that construction matters more than the difference between 2K and 4K.

It also suits anyone who wants the subscription question settled before they buy rather than after. You may not like the answer - identification is paid - but you can read the answer, which is more than most of the flagship roundup offers.

Who should not

Anyone who expects the species names for free. The free tier says plainly that it has no AI recognition, and if that is the feature you are buying the camera for, the models in the no-subscription roundup do it without a plan.

Anyone whose priority is the photograph. 2K with no published sensor size cannot be compared against the one camera in this category that does publish one, and if image quality is the point, the Birdbuddy is the better-documented purchase.

And anyone whose squirrel problem is squirrels eating rather than squirrels chewing. Metal is the wrong tool for that job.

Questions people actually ask

Does the SOLIOM bird feeder camera need a subscription?

For species identification, yes. SOLIOM's own cloud-plans page describes the free tier as three-day loop storage "with no AI recognition functionality", so naming the bird is a paid feature. Unusually for this category, SOLIOM publishes what the paid tiers cost, so you can work the number out before buying.

Does SOLIOM still sell the BF08S with hummingbird and suet add-ons?

Not on the listing we can currently verify. SOLIOM previously sold a BF08S variant with hummingbird and suet-ball attachments; that listing is no longer available, and the model we link to here is SOLIOM's current metal feeder camera, which does not advertise them. If the add-ons matter to you, check the current listing before buying.

Is the SOLIOM feeder camera really squirrel-proof?

It is squirrel-resistant in one specific sense: the metal case cannot be chewed through. It does not stop a squirrel sitting on the tray and eating the seed. Those are separate problems - the squirrel-proof roundup separates them properly.

What Wi-Fi does the SOLIOM feeder camera need?

SOLIOM does not publish the band on its listing, which is a real omission. Assume 2.4GHz, as nearly everything in this category is, and check your router before the feeder arrives.

How much seed does it hold?

SOLIOM does not state a capacity on the current listing, which is a real gap - hopper size decides whether you are refilling weekly or every other day in cold weather. If capacity is your priority, the 3.2L pick in the squirrel-proof roundup publishes one.

Have you tested this feeder?

No. Everything here comes from SOLIOM's published listing and its own cloud-plans page, both cited below. We have no sample unit and make no claims about image quality, battery life or durability, because none of those are published.
