Bird Feeder Camera Wi-Fi Requirements
The single most common reason a smart bird feeder goes back to the retailer is not a fault in the feeder. It is your router, and it takes about ten minutes to deal with once you know what is happening.

If a smart bird feeder is going to disappoint you, this is the most likely way it happens - and it happens during setup, before you have seen a single bird.
The problem, in one paragraph
Nearly every bird feeder camera on the market connects only to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Most modern routers - particularly mesh systems and carrier-supplied units - broadcast 2.4GHz and 5GHz under a single network name and decide for themselves which band a device should use. That arrangement is convenient for phones and laptops. It frequently prevents a 2.4GHz-only device from joining the network at all.
The failure looks like a faulty product. The app scans, finds nothing, times out, and tells you to check your connection - while every other device in the house works perfectly. It is not the feeder.
Why the cameras are 2.4GHz in the first place
This is a deliberate engineering choice and a correct one. The two bands trade range against speed: 2.4GHz travels further and penetrates walls and vegetation better, while 5GHz is faster over shorter distances with less obstruction.
A bird feeder is thirty feet down the garden, behind an exterior wall, sending short clips a few times an hour. It needs range, not throughput. Choosing 2.4GHz is the right call for the product - and it collides with the way routers have been configured for the last decade.

Look at your Wi-Fi network list
If you see two names - something like 'Home' and 'Home-5G' - your bands are separate and you will probably have no trouble at all. If you see one name, read on.

Check whether the signal reaches the feeder site
Stand where the feeder will hang, with a phone, and look at the signal. One or two bars through an exterior wall is a feeder that will keep dropping and burning battery on retries.

Find out whether you can get into your router's settings
If it is a carrier-supplied unit and you have never logged in, find out now whether you can - either through a web page or the provider's app. That is where the fix happens.

Getting a 2.4GHz-only camera onto a combined-band network

Move the phone next to the router during pairing
Many setup flows pass credentials from the phone, and if the phone is on 5GHz it may hand over the wrong band. Standing next to the router sometimes resolves it on its own.

Temporarily disable the 5GHz radio
In the router settings, turn off 5GHz. Pair the feeder - it now has only one option and takes it. Then turn 5GHz back on. Once the camera has joined, it generally reconnects afterwards without trouble. This is the standard fix and it works most of the time.

Or split the bands permanently
Give the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks different names. More work up front, permanently simpler afterwards, and useful for every other smart device you ever buy.

Some routers let you create a guest network fixed to one band. Put the feeder on it and leave the main network alone.

A last resort that works on some models: create a 2.4GHz hotspot, pair the camera to it, then change the network in the app. Not all models allow the change without a factory reset.

The single most common way a smart feeder fails is that the buyer's router broadcasts one merged network name across both bands, the camera can only see 2.4GHz, and pairing simply never completes. A camera that speaks both bands cannot fail that way.

4K on a feeder camera is more about cropping than about resolution. Sensor area is what governs how a photo looks when a bird lands at dusk, which is when most feeder traffic actually happens. Nobody else publishes the figure, so nobody else can be compared to it.
The thing worth noticing is what is missing. Every rival leads with an AI number - 6,000 species, 10,000 species. Birdbuddy prints none. A maker that does not put a number on its recognition claim is a maker with nothing to walk back, and after you read the species-claim audit that reads as confidence rather than as a gap.
The Wi-Fi position is the one to check before you buy. Birdbuddy's own support documentation says the original camera module requires 2.4GHz and does not work on 5GHz. A 9,000mAh cell paired with a 3W panel is the most generous published power budget in the category, and it is the reason this model turns up in so many yards that get only morning sun. It is also, notably, a number: Birdfy states it, most rivals do not, and a stated number is one you can hold them to.
The dual-lens arrangement is a genuine design decision rather than a spec-sheet flourish. One lens frames the whole feeder, the other pushes in on the perch. What that buys you is a photo where the bird fills the frame without the wide shot becoming useless - which is precisely the complaint people have about single-lens feeders.

Skip this: if you live where winter regularly drops below 14F. Birdfy publishes that as the bottom of the operating range, and a camera that stops in January is a camera you bought for eight months of the year.
Range, and the battery consequence
Getting connected is one problem; staying connected is another, and it has a cost people do not associate with Wi-Fi at all.
A camera on a weak signal wakes repeatedly to retry, and each retry costs power. A feeder that seems to have terrible battery life is very often a feeder with a marginal connection rather than a bad cell - which is why a flat battery in a distant corner of the garden is a signal problem, not a solar problem.
The fixes, in order of effort: move the feeder closer or clear of a metal obstruction - fifteen feet can be the whole answer, and a pole makes that easy; add a mesh node or access point nearer the garden; or check whether the 2.4GHz band is congested, since it is shared with a great many household devices and, notoriously, microwave ovens.
What good looks like
A stable connection at the feeder site, ideally two bars or better; the camera paired to a network it can find without arguing; and the feeder sited within range of the house rather than at the far boundary. Why won't my bird feeder camera connect to Wi-Fi?
Almost always because it is 2.4GHz-only and your router publishes both bands under one network name. Temporarily disabling the 5GHz radio, pairing the camera, then re-enabling it is the standard fix.
Do all bird feeder cameras need 2.4GHz?
Nearly all. The one exception we have found is the Birdfy 4K Full-Metal, which publishes dual-band support and joins a combined network the way a phone does.
Do I have to leave 5GHz turned off?
No. Turn it off only long enough to pair the camera, then turn it back on - once joined, the camera generally reconnects to the 2.4GHz band without further trouble.
How far from the router can the feeder be?
There is no fixed number - exterior walls, metal sheds and vegetation matter more than distance. Stand at the feeder site with a phone and check the signal; one or two bars means it will keep dropping.
Why does my feeder's battery drain so fast?
Often a weak signal rather than a weak battery. A camera retrying a marginal connection burns power continuously. Moving it closer to the house frequently fixes both problems at once.
Will a Wi-Fi extender help?
It can, if it puts a strong 2.4GHz signal nearer the feeder. Check that the extender publishes 2.4GHz under a name the camera can join, rather than repeating the same combined-band arrangement that caused the problem.
