Where to Put a Hummingbird Feeder Camera

Four requirements that pull against each other: enough light for the camera, enough shade for the nectar, enough signal for the Wi-Fi, and far enough from the ants.

Siting an ordinary hummingbird feeder is easy: somewhere you can see it, near cover, out of the worst heat. Adding a camera introduces two more requirements that fight the first three, and the result is a genuine four-way compromise.

The good news, and it is genuinely good: hummingbird feeders naturally hang near the house, so the Wi-Fi requirement that causes so much trouble with seed feeders is mostly solved for free here. The Wi-Fi guide covers what to do if it is not.

Resolving the light-versus-heat conflict

This is the real decision. The camera wants light; the nectar wants shade. The answer that satisfies both is morning sun and afternoon shade - an east-facing position under an eave or a tree that shades it from midday onward.

Hummingbirds feed heavily in the morning, so you get your light when the birds are most active and your shade when the heat would otherwise be spoiling the nectar. If you can only have one, choose the shade: a slightly darker clip is a minor disappointment, and fermented nectar is a welfare problem. The cleaning guide explains why that matters.

The solar complication

Everything above pushes toward a shaded position, and a shaded position makes a solar roof close to useless. This is why the non-solar trim is the sensible purchase for most hummingbird feeders and why both Birdbuddy versions are listed here - the choice is about the site, not the budget. There is a practical reason this variant makes more sense than it looks. Nectar feeders belong in shade - sun ferments sugar water fast, which is bad for the birds and worse for the smell. So the correct place for a hummingbird feeder is exactly the place a solar panel does nothing.

Buy this, put it in shade, and plan to bring the camera in to charge. That is the honest trade, and it is the right one more often than not.

Hummingbirds are the hardest subject in this entire category. A ruby-throated hummingbird beats its wings roughly fifty times a second and rarely holds still for a full second. Sensor size and dynamic range matter more here than anywhere else, and Birdbuddy is the only maker that publishes a sensor dimension at all - 1/2.7", the same as its seed feeder.

That does not make the photographs easy. It makes them possible. Expect a lot of frames with a blurred wing and a sharp head, which is what a hummingbird photograph looks like even from a professional.

Nectar capacity is not published, which matters more than it sounds: in July a busy hummingbird feeder empties in days, and nectar has to be replaced before it ferments regardless. See nectar and cleaning.

Two cameras is the correct answer to hummingbird photography and it is a little surprising nobody else has copied it. A hummingbird approaches from wherever it likes and leaves in a second. One fixed lens catches maybe a third of the visits usefully; two catch most of them.

20oz is a real published capacity, which puts it ahead of Birdbuddy on the one number Birdbuddy does not state. In peak season a busy feeder can empty that in under a week - and it has to be cleaned and refilled roughly every two to four days in hot weather regardless of level.

The Wi-Fi band is not stated. Two cameras is also two radios' worth of power draw with no published battery figure to plan against.

Skip this: if you would rather have the best single photograph than the most photographs. Birdbuddy publishes a sensor size; this does not, and the head-to-head is really a choice between coverage and optics.

Getting the birds to find it

Siting, in order

  1. 1

    Pick the east-facing shaded spot first

    Morning light for the camera, afternoon shade for the nectar. Do this before thinking about anything else - it is the constraint with the least give in it.

  2. 2

    Check it is within a couple of feet of cover

    Hummingbirds like a perch to retreat to and watch from. A feeder in the middle of open lawn gets used less than one near a shrub or a tree edge.

    Confirm the signal from that spot

    Stand there with a phone and check what the Wi-Fi looks like. Near the house this is usually fine, but a feeder around a corner behind a masonry wall may not be.

  4. 4

    Fit an ant moat before you fill it

    Ants find sugar water within a day or two, and a feeder they have colonised is one hummingbirds will stop using. Fitting the moat afterwards means cleaning the feeder first.

    Leave it three weeks before judging it

    New feeders take time to be found. If nothing has come in three weeks, move it nearer cover rather than assuming the camera is at fault.

Window feeders, briefly

A window-mounted hummingbird feeder gives spectacular close views and excellent Wi-Fi. It also puts a feeder against glass, and window strikes are a genuine hazard for birds. If you go this route, the standard advice applies: mount it within about three feet of the glass, so a startled bird cannot build up enough speed to injure itself, rather than at the ten-to-fifteen-foot distance that is worst.

Questions people actually ask

Should a hummingbird feeder be in sun or shade?

Morning sun and afternoon shade is the answer that satisfies both the camera and the nectar. If you can only have one, choose shade - heat ferments sugar water within days and that is a welfare problem, where a darker clip is only a disappointment.

How close to the house can I put it?

As close as you like, and closer is better for both viewing and Wi-Fi. If mounting on a window, keep it within about three feet of the glass so a startled bird cannot build up injuring speed.

How high should it be?

Anywhere from about four to six feet is fine for the birds. Practically, hang it at a height you can reach comfortably, because you will be taking it down to clean every few days in summer.

Why are no hummingbirds coming?

Usually time - three weeks is not unusual for a new feeder. After that, move it nearer cover, check the nectar has not fermented, and make sure ants have not taken it over.

Do I need solar if it hangs in the shade?

No, and it will not help you. In a shaded position buy the non-solar trim, which sometimes carries the larger battery, and plan to charge it.
