Smart Bird House Cameras

WIWACAM Bird Box Camera

It is not a birdhouse. It is the camera that goes inside the birdhouse you already have - and the maker sells two versions that differ in disclosure rather than price.

A great tit leaving the entrance hole of a wooden nest box

How this page is funded. Buying through a link here earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend or the order we recommend it in, and we have not handled any of these products ourselves - see how we pick and the full disclosure.

Buy the 4K Snapshot model. Of WIWACAM's two bird box cameras it quotes its stills and video resolutions separately, names a microSD card slot, and costs the same as the older one. The only reason to prefer the older WLAN version is an unusual box, because that listing claims the wider fitment.

Both are the same kind of thing: a self-contained camera module, about the price of a takeaway for two, designed to be fitted inside a wooden nest box that already exists. That makes this the cheapest route into nest box footage for anybody who is not starting from scratch.

What it is, precisely

A small Wi-Fi camera with a night mode, intended to be mounted in the roof of a birdhouse pointing down at the nest cup. No feeder, no box, no seed, no AI identification. It streams to a phone app and, on the newer model, records to a microSD card you supply.

That is a narrower product than anything else in this hub, and the narrowness is the point. The all-in-one nest boxes in the smart bird house roundup bundle a box, a camera, a solar panel and a species classifier into one purchase. If you already have a box you like, three of those four are things you are paying for twice.

Two listings, and the difference between them

WIWACAM sells both at the same time and at essentially the same price, which makes the comparison unusually clean - you are not trading money for disclosure, only attention.

The two WIWACAM modules on published figures

Separating stills from video is a genuinely better disclosure and it is rare anywhere in this category. A single '4K' figure usually means 4K stills and something lower for video, which is exactly what the newer listing admits and the older one does not.

The storage line matters more. 'microSD card slot' tells you where the footage lives. 'Recording' does not, and on a product with no stated cloud plan that leaves a question nobody should have to ask.

Why the night mode is the specification that counts

A nest box has one small entrance hole and no windows. The interior is dark at noon in June, and it is dark for the entire six weeks that anything interesting is happening in there.

So a nest box camera without illumination is not a dim camera; it is a camera that films nothing. Both WIWACAM listings state a night mode, and that is the minimum bar for the product type rather than a feature.

What neither states is whether that illumination is infrared or white light. The distinction shows up in your footage as monochrome versus color, and it is the one axis on which a generic all-in-one box beats both of these - the color night vision review covers a box that publishes full-color night vision, which on a subject that lives in permanent darkness is worth more than resolution.

This is the product most people searching for a birdhouse camera actually want and do not know exists: the camera on its own, for the box in the garden they already have.

Quoting 4K for stills and 2K for video separately is a better disclosure than the single number most of this category leads with. At four inches from the subject either figure is more than enough.

No AI identification is claimed, and that is fine. You know which species is in your box within a day of the first nest material arriving, and inside the chamber there is nothing for a classifier to be clever about.

What it does well

  • Fits a birdhouse you already own, so you keep the box the birds have accepted
  • Stills and video resolutions quoted separately
  • microSD slot, so the footage is local and not behind a plan
  • Night mode, which an interior camera cannot do without
  • Costs a fraction of an all-in-one smart nest box

What it does not

  • No card included
  • No published Wi-Fi band, sensor size or battery capacity
  • No solar option stated, so power is on you
  • Aimed at small-cavity boxes - the named species are all small birds
  • Fitting it means opening the box, which is an autumn job and not a spring one

Skip this: if you have no birdhouse yet. If you are starting from nothing, an all-in-one from the smart bird house roundup saves you drilling a camera into a box you then discover is the wrong hole size.

2. Fitting a box whose dimensions you have not measured

Two modules from one maker, sold side by side, and the difference is disclosure rather than price. This one claims wider fitment; the newer one quotes its stills and video resolutions separately and names a microSD slot.

Buy this one if your box is an odd shape or you want the option of pointing it at a feeder instead. Buy the newer one if you want the clearer specification.

'Recording' without a named medium is the gap here. It is probably the same card slot, and probably is not a specification.

PeekWild Solar Bird Box Camera

3. A box too far from the house to run a cable to

PeekWild Solar Bird Box Camera

The only nest box camera here that states solar power, which is the difference between a cable across the lawn and none.

$71.40 - View on Amazon

#ad Price checked October 17, 2026. How this is funded

Solar on a nest box camera solves a real problem. A box is sited for the birds, not for your power sockets, and once it is up you cannot go back and run a cable without opening it.

The cost of that is the resolution claim. "HD" with no number is the weakest camera specification anywhere on this site, and at four inches from the subject it is probably still fine - but probably is doing the work again.

No solar wattage either, so you cannot judge whether the panel will carry a camera through a wet March. Site it where it sees real sun.

What it does well

  • States solar power, which the other retrofit modules do not
  • Wireless, so no cable from the house
  • Night vision stated
  • Marketed for nest boxes rather than adapted to them

What it does not

  • "HD" with no resolution number
  • No solar wattage, so the panel cannot be judged
  • No published band, battery, sensor or storage
  • Dearer than either WIWACAM module

Skip this: if a number matters to you more than a cable does. The WIWACAM modules publish 4K and 2K; this one publishes an adjective.

What neither listing publishes

  • Wi-Fi band. Unstated on both. Assume 2.4GHz, because essentially every camera in this category is - and read the Wi-Fi guide, because a single-SSID router is the commonest reason one of these never pairs.
  • Sensor size. Unstated, so the 4K figure has no context. Pixel count without a sensor dimension tells you how big the file is, not how good the picture is in low light - and low light is all there is in a box.
  • Power source. Neither says solar and neither gives a battery capacity. Budget for a cable, or buy the PeekWild instead.
  • Night vision type. Infrared or white light is unstated, so monochrome or color is unknown.
  • Ingress rating. No number on either. It lives inside a box, which mitigates this, but a nest box roof is not a sealed enclosure.
  • Module dimensions. Neither listing gives the physical size of the camera, which is the one figure you want before drilling a box you care about.

Six gaps is not unusual for this category - it is roughly what the dearest Birdbuddy leaves blank too, at several times the money. It does mean you should measure your box's interior before ordering, because the listing will not do it for you.

The fitment claim, and how much to trust it

The older WLAN listing says it installs into most bird boxes, bird houses, birdhouses, feeders and nesting boxes. That is the broadest fitment claim of any product on this site, and it is untestable as written.

What is checkable is the species list both listings give: robins, wrens and tree swallows. Those are small-cavity birds, and that tells you the module is sized for a standard songbird box rather than something larger. If your box is a big one - a kestrel or owl box, say - treat this as a module aimed at smaller boxes and read the owl box page instead.

Who should buy it

Somebody with a birdhouse already up, ideally one that has been used, who wants to see inside it without disturbing a site the birds have accepted - and who can get a cable to it or is happy to.

That is a large group and almost nothing is written for them. The retrofit roundup is the broader version of this decision, with the solar alternative and the Blink enclosure ranked alongside.

Who should not

Anyone without a box yet. Buying a module plus a plain wooden box costs about what an all-in-one costs, and the all-in-one has the lens designed into the roof at a tested distance, a solar panel in the shell, and an entrance hole sized on purpose. The roundup of those is where to start.

And anyone whose box is out of Wi-Fi range, which is more people than expect to be - a box is sited for the bird. There is no cellular version of this, and the answers are in do bird feeder cameras need Wi-Fi.

The verdict

The most useful product in this hub for the people nobody writes for, at a price that makes the decision easy. It publishes less than it should and more than its own older sibling, it claims no AI it could not deliver, and it leaves power entirely to you.

Buy the 4K Snapshot model, fit it in October, aim it at the nest cup, and leave the box exactly where the birds found it.

Questions people actually ask

Which WIWACAM bird box camera should I buy?

The 4K Snapshot / 2K Video model. It costs the same as the older WLAN version and publishes more: separate stills and video resolutions, and a named microSD card slot. Choose the WLAN version only if your box is an unusual shape, since that listing claims the wider fitment.

Does the WIWACAM identify bird species?

No, and it does not claim to. Inside a nest box that is a reasonable omission - you know what is nesting within a day of the first nest material arriving.

Is a memory card included?

No. The newer model names a microSD card slot but the card is a separate purchase. Budget a few dollars more.

Does it need a subscription?

Neither listing mentions one, and the newer model records to a card you own. That is the arrangement least exposed to a future price change.

Will it fit my birdhouse?

Measure first. Both listings name robins, wrens and tree swallows, which tells you it is sized for a standard small-cavity box. Neither publishes the module's physical dimensions, so check the clear area of your roof panel before ordering.

Is it solar powered?

No. Neither WIWACAM listing states solar or gives a battery capacity, so plan a cable route. If that is impossible, the PeekWild is the only module in this hub that states solar power.
